In Russia, presidential elections are held every six years, and parliamentary elections (for the State Duma, or lower house of the Federal Assembly) are held every five years. Local elections, including elections for regional and local councils, are held on a regular basis as well. In addition, there are often referenda, or direct votes by the public, on various issues of national or local importance. It is important to note that the electoral process in Russia has been criticized by some international observers for not fully meeting international standards for free and fair elections.
